| Q: Do I need to bring towels, bedding, pillows, etc. | A: Major charter companies such as Sunsail and Moorings provide towels, bedding, pillows, etc. |
| Q: If I want to go snorkeling should I bring my own mask and snorkel? | A: Masks, snorkels and fins are provided and although experienced snorkeler/divers like to bring their own equipment, it's okay to use the loaner equipment. |
| Q: I would like to try scuba diving on this trip. Can this be done? | A: Dive companies usually offer "resort" scuba courses. These give a short course on the theory and practical use of equipment and then a supervised dive. Although these courses don't offer regular certification, sometimes subsequent dives can be made with nearby diving operators during the same trip. Resort diving is recommended for candidates with no applicable health problems who have experience and are comfortable with snorkeling. |
| Q: How does customs work when going from island to island? | A: Nothing needs to be done when traveling from island to island within the same country. When arriving at an island in an new country sailors need to be prepared to clear immigration and customs. As each country sometimes has different requirements- pay specific attention to this during your chart breifing at the charter base prior to boarding your yacht. All the details regarding who needs to go where and what documents to bring will be spelled out by the charter company. |
| Q: Do I need to know how to swim? | A: No. Most people stay inside the boat during their trip unless they want to go swimming or snorkeling. All boats are equipped with life vests so should you find yourlelf accidentally in the water, all you have to do is float until someone comes and gets you. |
| Q: Do I need to know how to sail? | A: No, but someone on the boat needs to know how to sail and usually there are plenty of people aboard a group trip who do and love doing it. |
| Q: How much money should I bring with me? | A: $500/person/week is usually enough to cover dining out almost every evening. A good supply of small bills are handy when paying individually while dining out as a group. Collecting cash while paying with a credit card for the whole table is a good way to replenish cash reserves while cruising. |
| Q: I want to stay longer. Can I get extra hotel nights before or after my vacation? | A: It's easy to make arrangements in advance to spend extra days on the island if you do so in advance. Last minute arrangements can be made, but often you may have to change hotels, which can ad to the adventure aspect of the trip. |
| Q: How does trip insurance work? | A: Trip insurance provided by the charter company at the time the trip is booked reimburses travelers for medical protection, baggage protection, travel accident protection, emergency assistance and trip cancellation/interruption. It should be noted that trip cancellation covers in case of illness, injury (of the traveler or a person in the immediate family) and cases where something goes awry with travel carriers, not if a traveler gets busy at work or the boss says, "You can't go." |
| Q: What if I am called away on an emergency in the middle of the trip? | A: Arrangements can usually be made with the airlines by paying an extra fee to leave early if necessary. This can be covered by trip cancellation insurance depending on the circumstances. As this is insurance and the details can change from week to week, be sure to ask about these things ahead of time so you are aware of your options. |
